The French Initiative
In an increasingly interconnected world, language is not only a means of communication—it is a gateway to opportunity. Knowing a second or third language can shape a learner’s academic journey, open doors to global careers, and enhance cultural understanding. This belief lies at the heart of The French Initiative, a groundbreaking program launched by the Mercy Wanjau Foundation in August 2025.
The program began with five schools in Kirinyaga County and reached 570 eager students, many of whom had never been exposed to any foreign language. This initiative, developed in collaboration with educational partners, has become a source of inspiration, excitement, and empowerment for the students and teachers involved.
Why the French Language Matters in Kenya
French is spoken in 29 African countries, making it one of the continent’s most widely used languages. Kenya, a hub of international diplomacy and business in East Africa, stands to benefit greatly from a population that speaks French.
Learning French can unlock opportunities in:
International relations
Tourism and hospitality
Aviation
Maritime services
Diplomacy and NGOs
Medicine
Global business
For students in rural or underserved areas, having this skill can dramatically raise their academic and career prospects.
The Birth of The French Initiative
The Mercy Wanjau Foundation recognized the need to expose learners to languages beyond the standard curriculum. Many students had limited exposure to global perspectives, and without targeted intervention, they risked being left behind in a world that increasingly values multilingual talent.
Through partnerships with educators, schools, and community stakeholders, the French Initiative was born. Its goal: provide equitable access to language education and create pathways to global competitiveness.
