Introduction
The Power of Education:
Across Kenya, thousands of learners face significant barriers that hinder their ability to thrive academically. Limited access to textbooks, outdated learning materials, overcrowded classrooms, and the absence of school libraries remain major challenges. These constraints don’t just affect academic performance; they impact confidence, future aspirations, and the development of critical skills needed in an evolving world.
Quality education:
Enables students to compete in local and global job markets
Reduces poverty and promotes economic sustainability
Fosters innovation, creativity, and leadership
Builds stronger, more informed communities
Breaks intergenerational cycles of disadvantage
When education thrives, communities thrive alongside it.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.– Nelson Mandela
Our Programs Driving Real Impact
1. The French Initiative
In August 2025, the Mercy Wanjau Foundation—together with partners—launched The French Initiative in Kirinyaga County. This program introduced French language instruction to 570 students across five schools, offering a unique academic edge and global opportunity for learners who otherwise may never have access to foreign languages.
French is one of the fastest-growing languages globally and a crucial language across Africa, diplomacy, tourism, aviation, and international trade. Learning it elevates students’ competitiveness and expands their career and academic horizons.
Already, teachers report:
Improved confidence in communication
Increased cultural awareness
Heightened enthusiasm for foreign languages
Stronger academic engagement
This initiative has the potential to grow nationwide—but requires sustained donor and volunteer support.
2. School Library Development
A school without a library leaves its students under-equipped for academic success. Libraries provide more than books; they offer safe spaces for reading, studying, creativity, and exploration. The Foundation is actively seeking school partnerships to establish well-equipped libraries within school compounds.
These libraries will offer:
Storybooks, textbooks, and reference materials
Digital learning resources
Inclusive materials for students with disabilities
Quiet learning spaces
Reading programs and literacy mentorship
For many schools, this will be the first library ever built within their community.
3. Leadership & Mentorship Programs
Education alone isn’t enough. Young people must also learn critical leadership skills such as communication, teamwork, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving. The Foundation’s leadership programs focus on helping students realize their potential and preparing them to become future changemakers in Kenya.
